About 'Someone Like You'

Inilah rahasia ilmiah dari betapa disukai sekaligus "terasa menyentuh"-nya lagu Someone Like You milik Adele.

Di antara sekian penghargaan yang diraih penyanyi dan penulis lagu Adele Laurie Blue Adkins (Adele) dalam perhelatan Grammy Awards ke-54 hari ini, salah satunya adalah di kategori "Best Pop Solo Performance" untuk tembang hit Someone Like You. Sebuah lagu yang terasa begitu spesial bagi banyak orang, bahkan diakui bisa membuat air mata seseorang mengalir, atau malah menangis terisak.

Tapi, kenapa lagu tersebut bisa begitu "kuat" membuat air mata mengalir? Tiap orang mungkin akan punya alasan-alasan berbeda, walau mungkin juga ada yang sama. Kebanyakan orang mungkin akan mengutarakan alasan personal.

Namun, sebagaimana salah satu artikel di Jezebel, lagu Someone Like You ternyata disebut memang punya beberapa faktor (berbeda) yang mampu "mengalirkan air mata" pendengarnya. Berikut rangkumannya:

Pertama, berdasarkan riset dari psikolog John Sloboda, sebuah "alat" musik yang dikenal dengan appoggiatura --menggunakan nada yang menciptakan suara sedikit tak selaras dengan melodinya-- biasanya efektif mengeluarkan air mata pada pendengarnya. Martin Guhn, psikolog lainnya, menjelaskan kenapa hal itu bisa terjadi. "Ini (appoggiatura) menimbulkan ketegangan dalam diri pendengar. Saat nada kembali ke melodi yang ada, ketegangan itu reda, dan akan terasa lega," tulisnya.

Dengan demikian artinya, jika beberapa appoggiatura diletakkan di beberapa bagian, maka kita akan mendapatkan serangkaian "naik dan turun", yang pada akhirnya membuat otak kita cukup terpengaruh untuk mengeluarkan tangisan. Maka, masuk akal rasanya jika melihat bahwa Someone Like You memiliki serangkaian nada yang berfungsi layaknya appoggiatura. Plus, seperti dikatakan Dr Guhn, Adele mengeluarkan suara (vokal) dengan cara yang menciptakan lebih banyak lagi lingkaran "ketegangan" dan "kelegaan" itu.

Tapi, bukan hanya itu "senjata" di salah satu lagu terbaik Adele tersebut. Dr Guhn dan rekannya Marcel Zentner juga menemukan dalam riset mereka, bahwa musik yang menimbulkan perasaan merinding biasanya melibatkan "kejutan-kejutan dalam pola volume, timbre dan harmoninya". Dan jika diperhatikan, Someone Like You memang memiliki semua itu di sepanjang lagunya.

Menurut para psikolog, pola-pola yang tak terduga dalam karya musik itu menyebabkan sistem saraf simpatetik kita bekerja keras, dan tergantung konteksnya, otak kita lalu akan menerjemahkannya sebagai sebuah provokasi "senang" maupun "sedih". Lantaran lagunya Adele ini jelas-jelas memuat tema (cerita) yang menyedihkan, otak kita saat itu pun didominasi "kegelapan" (sedih) dan air mata segera mengalir.

Lantas, jika ia membuat kita sebegitu sedihnya, mengapa kita justru sangat menyukai lagu tersebut? Kemungkinannya adalah sama dengan alasan mengapa kita menyukai tangisan bahagia, yaitu: (lagu) itu memberi kita (pelepasan) rasa lega. Ilmuwan saraf, Robert Zatorre menemukan bahwa mendengarkan lagu-lagu yang penuh emosi dapat menyebabkan otak seseorang melepaskan (unsur) dopamine di pusat kesenangannya. Anda tahu, apa lagi yang bisa melakukan hal seperti itu? Seks, makanan enak, juga obat-obatan. Jadi, jelas ciri-cirinya bukan?

Berdasarkan temuan (penelitian) Dr Zatorre, seperti dimuat di Wall Street Journal, bahwa saat mendengarkan lagu yang penuh emosi, "Jumlah (aktivitas) merinding yang terlihat berhubungan dengan jumlah dopamine yang dilepaskan, bahkan ketika musiknya benar-benar sedih. Hasil ini memberi kesimpulan bahwa semakin banyak emosi yang diprovokasi sebuah lagu, baik itu yang membuat depresi atau menyenangkan, (maka) akan semakin sering kita ingin mendengarkannya."

Jadi, itulah kesimpulannya secara ilmiah. Adele dan lagu-lagunya, terutama Someone Like You, sepertinya termasuk semacam obat-obatan yang tak bisa kita tolak maupun hindari untuk dinikmati. Itulah kenapa seperti diucapkan dalam salah satu acara "Saturday Night Live", dia (Adele dan musiknya) cocok sekali (dipasangkan) dengan "hari-hari buruk" maupun "es krim".
